Debt

* Create your 2004 filing system. This might include new file folders, a new box to hold them or space in a filing cabinet with easy access.

No one likes to think about dying, but the best thing you can do for your family is to make sure they are taken care of by creating a will and making sure you have adequate life insurance. Think how easily you'll sleep knowing you have provided for your family even if you are no longer there.

* Speaking of insurance… If you haven't reviewed your health or home and auto policies in the last couple of years you might find you can save money and/or have better coverage. For example, if you still have a $250 deductible (which was my first deductible in 1979!), you will probably save by increasing it to $500 or $1000. Try to set aside some of your savings for deductibles in

case you need them.

Exoplanets or planets in other solar systems ( other than our own ) is very difficult to find out. It was only in 1955 the first exoplanet was found. The separation between stars is so immense that it is measured in light year ( one light year is equal to six trillion miles). As it is no exoplanet has it`s own light, it reflects the light of it`s parent sun. The interstellar voyage diminishes the light so much so, that it is almost impossible to locate them or take their image. As our telescope gotten better, more and more Exoplanets came into sight. Some discovery was made by indirect means, as with recent declared ( November 2007) 55 Cancri planets. The gravitational perturbation to the movement of the parent star was the means of their discovery.
As of today astronomers have counted roughly 260 exoplanets around nearby stars; most of them are relatively large ; as big as our Jupiter. There are lot of excitement surrounding the 55 Cancri discovery because astronomers feel that at least there is one which is in habitable zone- that is an area surrounding the star where the temperature permits the liquid water to exist. So the possibility of life too.

Have we lost the true spirit of Halloween? Remember when your parents helped you create a costume. It was a great family activity that gave way to lasting memories. A time when parents and children worked together, creating the best Mummy, Soldier, or Vampire costume. Today it almost seems like an ancient art. Very seldom do you so see a child wearing a “home made” costume.

According to the KidzEyes Holiday Wish List and Habits survey, 64 percent of kids say that their moms bear the brunt of responsibility for making sure the Christmas season is bright versus a mere 1 percent who say dad does his fair share.
While the stress associated with the multitude of seasonal tasks could easily turn mothers into Grinches, 50 percent of kids say their moms handle the holidays like snow angels. Girls are a little tougher on mom with 52 percent claiming mom is a little crankier during the hustle of the holiday season (less than 50 percent of boys say so).
This year’s KidzEyes Holiday Wish List & Habits survey -- conducted annually by KidzEyes, a specialized youth market research division of C&R Research -- uncovers how (and if) families share holiday-related responsibilities, what’s hot and what’s not on kids’ wish lists this year, whether kids really believe in the jolly man in red and what they believe is the true meaning of Christmas.
“Our annual Holiday Wish List and Habits survey has become a recognized vehicle that gets at the heart of what kids are thinking about, doing and wishing for during the holidays,” said Robbin Jaklin, president, C&R Research. “The results provide a glimpse into what is undoubtedly kids’ favorite time of year.”
As the primary holiday gift buyer, what should moms be shopping for to give their little angels? It is certainly not clothes, which again appears at the very bottom of kids’ wish lists. Electronics continue to take the top spot (37 percent) followed by hard, cold cash (30 percent) and toys (21 percent). Boys tend to want electronics more than girls, helping to vault them to the top spot among kids.
This year kids have gift giving ideas of their own. When asked what they would give their parents if they could give them just one “big” gift, 45 percent said a vacation, 27 percent said house cleaning assistance, 16 percent said money and 12 percent said time off work. Here are some of the other things kids are saying about the holidays this year:
Holiday Hustle -- Mom versus Dad
* Where is Your Father? . . . According to the KidzEyes survey there is nothing on the family holiday to-do list that mom doesn’t do. Twenty-five percent of kids say their moms are responsible for buying the presents and decorating the house. According to kids, dad does not offer much of a helping hand with either holiday chore -- only 1 percent and 3 percent respectively.
* A Woman’s Work is Never Done . . . More than half (54 percent) of kids say that moms are the chief holiday cook. Only 4 percent say dad dons an apron. And, moms (47 percent) not dads (one percent) clean the house in preparation for the big day.
* It’s a Guy Thing . . . Dad’s domain seems to be the tree with nearly one-quarter of kids saying that putting up the tree is their dad’s main job. But, the truth is, dad puts his little elves to work as 50 percent of kids say it’s really a job the whole family shares.
* It’s a Family Affair . . . Eight out of 10 kids (87 percent) say that decorating the tree is a family tradition -- something they do together. Nearly two-thirds say the whole family pitches in when it comes to decking the halls.
* Shopping Styles -- Mom versus Dad . . . According to kids, 25 percent of dads shop for their wives the week before Christmas, while another 13 percent say their dads are scouring the stores on Christmas Eve. In sharp contrast, 55 percent of kids say their moms shop for their loving husbands a month before the big day, with only 5 percent who say that their moms wait until one week before Christmas. Less than a percent say their moms are out shopping frantically on Christmas Eve.
The True Meaning of Christmas
* Christmas Spirit . . . Even kids as young as 6 years old have a solid idea of the “true meaning of Christmas.” According to 70 percent of kids, the true meaning is celebrating the birth of Christ. Another 39 percent say it is being thankful and 37 percent say it is spending time with family. Surprisingly, only 13 percent say the true meaning is about receiving gifts.
* Charitable Hearts . . . Nearly half of kids think of others during the holidays; 48 percent say they would ask their parents to donate some of their allocated “gift” money to charity. Of all kids surveyed, girls between the ages of 6 and 8 are the most likely to give up their presents (60 percent -- 13 percent more than boys the same age). Gifts . . . What’s Hot and What’s Not
* Stop the Music! . . . Along with clothes (7 percent), kids don’t want to see music and videos (6 percent) in their heaping pile of gifts this year.
* Electronics are Tops . . . According to the survey, the best gifts are electronics (37 percent), with video game systems or handheld video games leading the category (57 percent). Those were closely followed by computers and software (53 percent), cellular telephones (38 percent), CD players (32 percent) and DVD players (31 percent).

Christmas Music Continues to Inspire, Soothe, Reflect a Season

Whether it’s in a majestic cathedral, a school auditorium or a shopping mall, there’s nothing like a familiar Christmas melody to put a person in the holiday spirit. It’s amazing how the familiar strains of “Silent Night” or “Joy to the World” create feelings of joy, hope and peace.
Why does Christmas music evoke such strong emotions? Music educators and Bible scholars at Northwestern College in Saint Paul, Minn., cite childhood memories, the character of the music, and the histories of the songs themselves as reasons for Christmas music’s emotional appeal.
“During the Christmas season we look for familiar, comforting sounds of traditional, timeless music and theology. We are willing to suspend our need for what is novel, exciting or cutting-edge,” explains Timothy Sawyer, director of choral activities. “Christmas carols provide a familiar, comforting presence to which we can return year after year. This is perhaps one reason why, since its composition in 1742, Handel’s “The Messiah” has remained so popular during the holiday season.”
“People have powerful childhood and family memories built around the Christmas season, which to a large extent is defined by its music,” says Dr. Philip Norris, professor of music. “We simply can’t think of Christmas without music. Even in secular settings the Christmas story and its music are part of the aura.”
Dr. Ardel Caneday, professor of Bible understands the impact of childhood memories. “When I was in high school, the men’s octet would join the women’s sextet to sing ‘Silent Night’ a cappella. I fondly remember singing second tenor in the men’s octet. The crisp harmony was deeply stirring. It was a joy to contribute to the beautiful sounds of a favorite and cherished Christmas carol.”
From their humble beginnings in the 4th century, Christmas songs focused on the supernatural aspects of Christmas. One of the earliest songs was “Jesus refulsit omnium” (Jesus, light of all the nations) composed by St. Hilary of Poitiers, a prolific writer of hymns.
St. Francis of Assisi formally introduced Christmas carols to church services during the 12th century. A patron of the arts, he inspired composers and poets to deliver Christmas music. The lighter, joyous Christmas songs were introduced during the 1400s in Renaissance Italy. From Italy they passed to France and Germany, and eventually England where they retained simplicity, fervor and mirthfulness.
“The musical character of Christmas songs reflects the season’s themes: mother and child (Mary & Jesus), joy, hope, peace,” Dr. Norris explains. “The melodies, harmonies and rhythms created for the songs reflect those themes.”
For example, he explains, “Joy to the World” has a lively rhythm that begins on and repeats its highest note seven times. “Every phrase of the music follows the biological, physical shape of ‘joy’ -- a sudden rising to a high pitch with a subsiding direction immediately following.”
Dr. Mark Muska, chair of Northwestern’s Bible department, says Christmas music brings the focus back on the spiritual meaning. “The music helps people get back to the real meaning of Christmas,” he says. “Sometimes we get caught up in the commercialism, but the music helps us focus on the Lord’s birth.”
“The distinctive and joyful sound of Christmas music inspires reflection upon the incarnation of God’s Son and the hope of peace and salvation that He brings,” adds Dr. Caneday.
The stories of Christmas hymns and carols also contribute to the season’s musical aura. “One of my favorite Christmas carols is Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s ‘I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day,’” Dr. Caneday says. “It’s particularly stirring for me because of its historical setting against the backdrop of the American Civil War.”
Longfellow’s words reflect grief over the death of his wife, his bitter opposition to the war, and the sorrow of his son gravely injured in the war.
The history of “Silent Night” continues to inspire people. It was written in Bavaria on Christmas Eve 1818 when the church organ was broken and the town was snowbound. Church vicar Joseph Mohr wrote the lyrics on the spot then handed them to organist Franz Gruber, who composed the original melody with guitar accompaniment just in time for midnight mass.
The origins of Christmas songs reflect history, religions attitudes and world cultures.
* Handel’s “The Messiah,” originally had nothing to do with Christmas. Its premiere in Dublin was a benefit for prisoners jailed for debt. Enough money was raised to free 142 debtors.
* “O Holy Night” was written by Adolphe Charles Adam, the French composer best known for his ballet, “Giselle.” Church authorities that denounced its lack of musical taste and “total absence of the spirit of religion” frowned upon the song.
* “It Came Upon a Midnight Clear” was written in 1849 by Edmund Hamilton Sears who expressed a longing for peace. It was penned after the Mexican-American War when skirmishes between settlers and Indians and slavery supporters and abolitionists were igniting across the frontier.
* “O Little Town of Bethlehem” came out of the Civil War and was written by Phillips Brooks, a Philadelphia pastor who ministered to Union soldiers. Theories of the poem’s meaning vary. One theory explains the stillness in Bethlehem mirrors the stillness in Philadelphia where a generation of young men had been wiped out. The other theory is he wrote the text during a Christmas trip to the Holy Land and was describing Bethlehem.

If not for the fact that Christmas is a time of laughter and merriment, the yuletide season can be awfully frustrating especially for people who have a budget to think of. With lots of expenses for the Christmas celebration already lined up at your door — decorations, dinner, gifts — sticking to the family budget can be difficult, at best! That is, unless, you are smart enough to come up with creative ideas on how to spend Christmas with a bang without spending a lot.
Here are some tips:
1) Reuse paper, bows and decorations.
Since Christmas happens every year, it is a good idea to reuse decorations and other yuletide materials for succeeding years.
Christmas trees and Christmas decorations, for instance, may be used over and over again until they wear out. If the family wants to create something different every year, they can always work with decorations that are already there and then buy some new ones to spruce the old ones up.
Although some families still opt for a real pine tree during the Christmas season, most use artificial ones, as they are more cost-effective and practical.
Christmas materials that can be recycled are yuletide decorations like lanterns, plates, table runners, curtains, bed sheets, pillowcases and all those home furnishings with Christmas designs. Using the same things year after year can however be pretty tiring. What you can perhaps do is to add a new element every year or to alternately use the home decors.
When storing materials that you will use again, make sure that you put them in a place that is easily accessible. Carefully store them in boxes and put them in a cool dry place to prevent moisture from coming in.
2) Make your own gifts.
Use your creativity to save money and still come up with the best celebration. Instead of buying Christmas pillowcases, sheets and place mats, you can create your own designs. Take a look at your house and look for things that you can use. For instance, instead of buying artificial flowers for a Christmas centerpiece, why not make use of the flowers that you grow in your garden? Another idea is to buy some small decors in craft stores and use them to spruce up curtains, runners and pillowcases.
3) You can make your own Christmas tree decorations. In fact, some people even personalize their Christmas tree decorations by putting the photographs of each family member on the tree. Young children in the family can also use the projects that they have made in school to decorate the family tree. Decoration-making is also a fun way for parents and children to bond.
4) Make your own gift cards, wrappers and table cards for dinner celebrations. Why buy when it is easy to make your own? All you need to do is gather some craft materials that may be sitting in your attic. You will be amazed at how fun it is to make your own Christmas wrapping paper and gift cards. You can coordinate them with each other and they will be totally unique!
5) Save money on the Holiday Meals.
Going out to eat may pose several advantages, two of which are, you don’t have to prepare the food and you don’t have to wash the dishes. Still, eating at a restaurant can chip away at a major portion of your Christmas budget. If you don’t have extra money, it is advisable to just stay at home and cook dinner yourself. In addition to saving a lot of money, you will also be able to control the ingredients, making sure that they are not only delicious but also nutritious.
To economize and add some surprise to the menu, you can ask your guests to bring a dish. One family can prepare the appetizer while the other family will take care of the dessert. This way, the cost of the dinner will not only be shouldered by the host family but by everyone in the guest list. Christmas Decorating Trends

This year, the latest craze in Christmas decorating is going back in time. Homeowners seem to be less interested in the icicle-type lights and the use of single color strands. Baby boomers seem to be harkening back to the days of their youth, by bringing back the full color glory of traditional Christmas lights.
Lawn ornaments have become a must-have for the decorating elves in your neighborhood. Families everywhere are installing huge lawn ornaments, many consisting of animated light patterns. They sheer number of choices for shapes, sizes, and designs should tell you that these are very popular with festive homeowners. I am a huge fan of the old-style bubble lights (you know…..the ones with colored water and bubbles inside), and they have returned with a vengeance.
Many people seem to be gravitating back to using real trees, instead of using plastic pre-fab ones. Who can blame them? They smell great, and they make Christmas feel that much more real. My family has always used a real tree. It has become a family tradition to go out and cut the tree ourselves. We usually wait until mid-December. We all get bundled up in our snow gear, get our sleighs out, along with a thermos of hot apple cider, and make our way into the bush. The kids love it, the dog loves it, and it makes for an excellent family adventure!
It seems that Christmas flowers have also changed with the times. Although the classic red poinsettia will likely be with us for the rest of time, many florists are offering their customers alternatives. As has been the case with flowers in general for some time, florists are now adding dyes to traditional holiday flowers and bouquets. My personal favorite happens to be a bright violet poinsettia. My daughter prefers cobalt blue. What is yours?
Whether you are a staunch Christmas traditionalist or you are keen on changing along with the current decorating trends, Christmas decorations have never before been so varied and left consumers with so many choices. So get out there and shop, shop, shop! Tis the season, after all!

Yes its that time of year again. So what's your plan this year? Where you just going to leave it to the last minute again and compete with the rest of the country for the last few items on the shelves come Christmas Eve? I know that with this little guide you can help save yourself from a lot of stress this Christmas so take a few minutes to read on.
1) Its always best to make a start with a list of people you want to buy presents for. Do not feel pressured into buying big gifts for everyone. As the old saying goes 'its the thought that counts' so you can just buy small gifts for some people. Lots of family members come to an agreement prior to Christmas not to exchange gifts. If money is maybe a bit tight for you this year then maybe you should consider this option.
2) Work out your budget. How much do you want to spend in total this Christmas on gifts. Don't forget things like wrapping paper and cards. Take that figure and divide it into amounts you'd like to spend on each person on your list.
3) Be strict with your budget! I've made this a separate point as its so easy to get carried away when your in the shops and spend much more than you intended on your Christmas presents. I know as I've been there myself.
4) To make your Christmas gifts a success its always best to ask the main people you will be spending money on what they would actually like. Likewise make a list of things you would like to receive so you can give people options of things to buy you.
5) Thanks to the advent of the Internet you can now buy many of your Christmas presents online. This can save time, effort and money. Certain gifts you might not find on the Internet, but its always a good starting point.
6) Now the hardest bit. Going to the shops. Some people may enjoy this, many find the Christmas shopping experience a nightmare. Going early is the keyword. If you don't manage to go earlier in the year than December then at least go early in the morning. You'll beat the main crowds if you can be in the shops when they open then home for lunch.
So all that's left now is just to wrap those gifts and enjoy Christmas. Oh and one last tip. If you can get to the shops in the January sales this is a great time to buy everything for next Christmas.

Finally, the season so many of us are looking forward to is just around the corner.Joy, peace, happiness, children, lights, decorations and Santa Claus, these are just
a few of the things associated with Christmas. Although these are things most people think about Christmas, for others it might be a nightmare.
Unfortunately Christmas has become the biggest commercial money making machine there is and a lot of people has fallen in its trap. This should not be. Yes, Christmas is about giving but not the type of giving that comes out of your wallet rather the type that comes from the heart.
Giving and sharing is what this season is all about and if all of us could just remember that and take our wallets and money out of the picture, it would lighten the burden of
Christmas for so many people.
These two words, giving and sharing, can have different meanings for different people but it basically comes down to the same thing. Offering
some of yourself to others in need.
Imagine if you could make a difference for one family this Christmas. Many families have nothing to offer their loved ones, no Christmas dinner, no gifts and no decorations.
Worst of all, some don’t even have a place to go. Therefore sharing some of yours with them could be the greatest gift you give someone this year. The joy from doing so would be beyond your belief.

The Twelve Days of Christmas is one of the most famous Christmas carols ever written. It has been sung for a great many years, and is known the world over. To most it is a delightful hymn, but it was originally created with a very serious intent. In England between the years of 1558 and 1829, it was illegal to practice Catholicism in public or private. It was essentially a crime to be Catholic in England during those years.

The Twelve Days of Christmas was written to help preserve the traditions of the Catholic faith during the years that Catholicism was banned in England. The song is steeped in symbolism, and the fact that it is so well known throughout the world is a testament to the faith of the followers of the Catholic doctrine. The symbols contained in the song are as follows:

1st verse – "True Love" refers to God.
2nd verse – "2 Turtle Doves" refers to the Old and New Testaments.
3rd verse – "3 French Hens" refers to Faith, Hope, and Charity.
4th verse – "4 Calling Birds" refers to the Four Gospels or the Four Evangelists.
5th verse – "5 Golden Rings" refers to the first five Books of the Old Testament.
6th verse – "6 Geese-a-laying" refers to the six days of creation.

I find it very interesting that a song we all know so well could contain so many hidden meanings. I would never have guessed that it was anything more than lovely Christmas carol. Every year, as Christmas approaches, you hear Christmas carols everywhere. Sometimes to the point where another Silent Night would make you want to silent the sound system.
Everyone is scrambling to buy Christmas gifts for everyone in a list that seems miles long. The queues to pay up and the queues for a parking lot seem endlessly long too.
Christmas cards are sent out to friends and family, some of whom you might not have seen for years.
Beautifully decorated Christmas trees pop up every where. Buildings are dressed in lights, mistletoes, bells, and other Christmas decorations. Santa Claus, his elves and reindeer are seen every where. Kids get more and more excited as Christmas approach. Even grown ups prepare for the onslaught of Christmas partying during that time of the year. Party dresses are purchased. Everyone gets ready to dress to their nines.
In all this excitement, do you know what you are celebrating?
What is Christmas actually? It sometimes seems like a brillian invention of the toy makers to push sales of toys to all the parents around the world. A sales marketing ploy of the retail industry.
Actually, Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. Long ago, a little baby was born to a girl who was still a virgin. The baby was born in a manger, among the animals, yet angels proclaimed his birth. Wise men followed a star that marked his birth and presented him with precious gifts, to pay homage to him. It all seemed so beautifully sweet.. until you realise the reason why this child was born.
This baby was born to die. To be crucified on the cross while still in his prime. Killed alongside murderers, on the insistence of the crowds, even though he had not committed a crime... days after being welcomed into Jerusalem by crowds of people waving palm leaves, shouting Hosanna, praising him.
It was a gruesome death. He was whipped and then his body, all covered with blood, still a live, was nailed to a cross and left to die. Upon his death, the skies turned dark. There was an earthquake The curtain separating the holiest place in the temple in Jerusalem from the rest of the area was torn in two.
3 days later, his tomb was empty and the heavy stone was rolled away. His disciples and those close to him saw him. He spent time with them, ate with them, showing he was alive and not a ghost. Later, while talking to a crowd of people, he rose up in the sky disappeared into the clouds.
All this happened for a reason.
The first man and women, Adam and Eve disobeyed God. That was the first sin. From then on, every one of us sins. A tiny white lie, doing what we know we shouldn't do... The Many Faces of Santa

Santa Claus actually started out as a version of Poseidon,
Greek god of the sea, known as Neptune by the Romans. Early
Greek sailors feared him. He could bring terrible storms in
the sea, or grant them safe journeys. Because he could save
them from the angry waters, he because known as "giver of
all good things". The Romans and Greeks held a festival on
December 6 in his honor.
Many countries still celebrate Christmas on December 6 but
due to the rise of Christianity, the day was changed to St.
Nicholas Day in honor of an Asian bishop. Nicholas of Myra
was a benevolent bishop who wore red clothing, rode a white
horse who could fly, and delivered gifts anonymously.
In America, we celebrate with Santa and his flying reindeer.
But many countries still celebrate with their own unique
version of Santa.
In Sicily, it is the spirits of departed loved ones who
bring gifts to children.
Italian children wait for a kindly old witch named Befana
who flies through the air on a broom.
A Russian counterpart is known as Baboushka. Also called
Grandfather Frost in some parts of the country.
In Holland "Sintirklass" arrives by boat on December 6th.
Children leave a wooden shoe filled with hay and carrots for
the donkey which carries the pack of toys.
In Sweden a gnome called "Juletomten" brings gifts in a
sleigh driven by goats.
In Germany and Switzerland the "Christkindl", or Christ
Child, brings the gifts. In some towns, Christkindl is an
angel who comes down from heaven to give gifts.
In Australia Santa rides water skis, has a white beard, and
red bathing suit.
In China, Christmas Old Man, brings gifts to children.
In England, Father Christmas wears a longer coat and has a
longer beard.
In France he's known as Pere Noel.
All of Latin America and Spain are predominantly Catholic so
Baby Jesus, el Niño Jesus, brings the gifts.
In Puerto Rico, children receive gifts from the Three Kings
on January 6th, also called Epiphany. Every child puts
grass under their bed for the camels. In the morning the
grass is replaced with gifts. But since Puerto Rico is part
of the United States, major gift giving is done on December
25 from Santa Claus.
In Morocco he is known as Black Peter.
In Japan, Santa Claus is called just "Santa" and many
children still call him "Santa no ojisan," which means
"Uncle Santa."
No matter what name a child calls Santa, it's a thrill to
write to, and get an answer from the North Pole.

The History of the Christmas Card

The Christmas card, as we know it, originated in England in the year 1843. An artist named John Calcott Horsley was commissioned by Sir Henry Cole, a wealthy and successful London businessman, to create a card that could be sent out to his friends and clients to wish them a merry Christmas.
Sir Henry Cole was very well known at the time, for a number of reasons. He had a helping hand in helping to modernize the British postal system. He played a prominent role in the creation of the Royal Albert Hall, and acted as the construction manager on this massive project. He also arranged for the Great Exhibition of 1851, and he oversaw the inauguration of the Victoria and Albert Museum.
One of Sir Henry Cole’s greatest aspirations in life was to beautify the world around him. He owned and operated a wonderful art shop on Bond Street, which specialized in decorative objects for the home. His shop was hugely popular with the British upper class, and he earned a tidy sum from his business.
The Christmas card he commissioned was fashioned in the form of a triptych, which is a three-paneled design that allows for the two outer panels to be folded in towards the middle one. Each of the two side panels depicted a good deed. The first showed an image of people clothing the poor, and the other side panel showed an image of people feeding the hungry. The center piece had an image of a well-to-do family making a toast and surrounded by an enormous feast.
The inscription on the inside of the card read "A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you." Of the one thousand cards printed for Sir Henry Cole, only twelve exist today in private collections. The printed card became highly fashionable in England during the years that followed. They also became very popular in Germany. It took quite a long time for the idea to catch on in America, then popularized by a German expatriate named Louis Prang in 1875. Today, more than 2 billion Christmas cards are exchanged each year. Winifred or Willow? Thomas or Troy? The name you choose for your child will last a lifetime. Whether you're looking for something original that will stand out from the crowd or a traditional name that people will instantly recognize, choosing a name for your new baby is a huge responsibility.
It goes without saying that you as the parents must like the name. Names that hold bad associations for you are out (Jeremy was a bore at school, you can't stand Bella in the Tweenies), and if you consider your own name uninteresting, you may wish to choose something more exotic - or vice versa.
Think carefully about combinations of first name and surname. Are they compatible? You may like a mixture of an unusual first name with a more familiar surname (Zara Phillips), but be careful about rhyming the two names - Mark Clarke won't thank you for it. Beware initials that could cause hilarity to your child's future friends - Ethan Thomas or Peter Oliver Ogilvie won't be joining in the giggles! Trying to be clever can also cause grief - Poppy Fields or Summer Winters may sound cute at the time, but can eventually grate on everyone's nerves!
If she's called Grace, will she turn out to be butter-fingered? Will Maximus grow into a Mr. Puniverse? Is Jordan a boy or a girl? What will Elizabeth grow up as? Lizzie? Beth? Liza? And as for Ashleigh, Ashley, Ashlee, Ashlea and Ashlie - all in circulation at the moment - how is anyone supposed to find a name that is both special and appropriate?
Fortunately, sources of inspiration can be found everywhere. You can avoid the throng of Chloes, Emilys, Jacobs and Jacks topping the baby name charts for the past few years, and choose from a huge variety of names collected in specialist books and on the Internet. Some parents prefer biblical names - Rebecca, Abigail, Joshua, Samuel and Joseph are all very popular at the moment. Names inspired by nature include Blossom, Lily or Skye and even Tiger for boys. Place names (Paris, Lamorna), colours (Coral, Ebony), astronomy, music, and sport - all provide a wealth of ideas and choice.
Naming twins presents its own set of challenges. You may wish to link the names in some way using the same first letter (Jack and Jill?) or a theme such as Liberty and Faith, or even similar names like Leo and Eleonora. However, you might end up having two very independent children who don't wish to be connected by name as well as birthday. A less obvious connection involves using different names with similar meanings such as Columba and Jemima (both meaning dove), or Jonathan and Matthew (gift of God).

The Cat in the Hat Gets More Famous Each Day -- In English, Now Latin, He’s Here to Stay

We read it as children, a book we adored. With the cat in a hat, and the kids who were bored.
Then Hollywood called, said he should be a star. Reporters were writing, this Cat will go far.
Now more kids are reading, it’s even translated. This short little tale, Theodor Geisel created.
Who would have thought a simple story about a free-spirited cat who entertains two bored children on a rainy day would become such a powerhouse? Published in 1957, “The Cat in the Hat” has always been a perennial children’s favorite, but recently it seems to be getting the attention normally reserved for a new blockbuster.
The “Cat” is everywhere you look this year: the new Hollywood movie, the Cat-themed merchandise, the Latin translation. Latin translation?
Yes, the book is one of three Dr. Seuss classics that have been translated into Latin. After the success of the Latin “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” scholars Jennifer and Terrence Tunberg turned their attention to the mischievous cat and his disorderly friends. The result is a Latin version in rhyming verse that echoes the sound of the original, presented with the same whimsical artwork of Dr. Seuss.
“They really did a great job translating this one,” says Marie Bolchazy, co-owner of the book’s publisher Bolchazy-Carducci Publishers, Inc. “This book was difficult to work with; in English, it’s amusing, but a literal translation into Latin wouldn’t be.”
The Latin words wouldn’t rhyme that way Geisel’s English phrases did and the verses wouldn’t have the same pleasing rhythm in a different language, and so the Tunbergs had to work hard to make “Cattus Petasatus” just as amusing and poetic as the original.
“They really captured the whimsy of Dr. Seuss,” adds Bolchazy, whose company also published the Latin translations of “The Grinch” and “Green Eggs and Ham.”
Even Bolchazy was caught off guard by the amount of media attention generated this year by the story of the disruptive cat. USA Weekend, the Associated Press, United Press International and many regional papers such as the Chicago Tribune have done stories and the company has also worked with movie theaters on some promotions. “It has really taken off, the book has a universal appeal, and it is a fun way to begin learning about Latin,” says Bolchazy.
Since its publication, “Cattus Petasatus” has sold over 35,000 copies and shows no signs of slowing down. Soaring enrollment in Latin classes and an increased interest in the language could be part of the reason. “Latin is a ‘hot’ language again,” says Bolchazy, who says that studies have shown that students of the language outperform all others on the verbal portion of the SAT.

The Cat and the Evil Parakeet

Parakeets were “in” during the winter of 1952, and my little brother David had his heart set on one. On December 24, Mamma, Daddy, and I went to a parakeet breeder, paid $7.95, and brought home the pretty green bird we had reserved. The parakeet was hidden in the back bedroom overnight, but, in the early morning dark of Christmas Day, the softly glowing bubble lights on our tree revealed the birdcage on the living room floor among the other gifts.
At six that morning, Daddy and Der Doc the cat came into the house after milking the cows. Der Doc always supervised as Daddy and the hired man milked. He was rewarded for his efforts with a bowl of fresh milk and a good many compliments from Daddy. Pussycats can tell by your tone of voice that you are complimenting them. They love compliments and believe every one. Therefore, though Der Doc was a rather ugly grey tiger-striped cat, he believed he was good looking. He further believed that he was a superior member of the milking team.
The Superior Milking Team of Daddy and Der Doc stepped through the living room door side by side, heads held high. Der Doc saw and smelled the parakeet in the same instant. Without thinking, he instinctively made a flying leap across the room and onto the cage.
And, without thinking, Daddy instinctively gave Der Doc a boot with his foot that sent him flying.
Our good-looking member of the Superior Milking Team did not believe for a moment that Daddy, who was so very kind, had given him the boot. Clearly we had an evil bird, one who could, from inside its cage, send a cat flying.
Der Doc never again stayed in the same room as the parakeet. This inconvenienced him a good deal, particularly when the parakeet flew into the room while Der Doc was asleep on the living room sofa. He nevertheless stuck by his motto, “Better safe than sorry.”

The value of Christmas and Hanukkah isn’t found in the glossy pages of mail order catalogs, the frenetic hype of TV commercials, or the slick graphics of the dot com world. Nope, my greatest enjoyment on Christmas morning has never come from knowing how much my gifts cost, or that they’re the “latest” thing, but rather that my son or daughter cared enough to take the time to buy or make a gift for me that was something truly meaningful to me not just a pretty package to place under an already over-burdened tree.
A tin box filled with a dozen handmade cookies from my aging neighbor, even though she may have accidentally substituted salt for sugar again this year, are cookies made all the sweeter because of the love poured into each one. Christmas without those cookies just wouldn’t be Christmas. My favorite gifts to receive are the ones that require some time, not just some money and the biggest, baddest elbows to get to this year’s best- seller before the rest of the mob. I like knowing that I’ve been thought about by my loved ones and dear friends, that I’m more than just another checkmark on their holiday to do list.
And as much as I like to receive handmade gifts, I like giving them even more. My favorite gifts to give have always been the ones that I’ve made with my own two hands; one year a blanket, another year an oak mantle clock assembled from a kit. I sanded and varnished and sanded again, with each stroke I imagined the smile on Dad’s face when he unwrapped it Christmas morning. And he did smile and that clock still ticks on that mantle.
Sit back for just a moment. Put up your feet, close your eyes and think back over the years to the best gifts you’ve given and received. What made that gift so special? Was it how much it cost, or the store that it came from, or the fact that it wouldn’t be paid for until next December? Probably not.

I remember my first Christmas party with Grandma. I was just a kid. I remember tearing across town on my bike to visit her on the day my big sister dropped the bomb: "There is no Santa Claus," she jeered. "Even dummies know that!" My grandma was not the gushy kind, never had been. I fled to her that day because I knew she would be straight with me. I knew Grandma always told the truth, and I knew that the truth always went down a whole lot easier when swallowed with one of her world-famous cinnamon buns. Grandma was home, and the buns were still warm. Between bites, I told her everything. She was ready for me. "No Santa Claus!" she snorted. "Ridiculous! Don't believe it. That rumor has been going around for years, and it makes me mad, plain mad. Now, put on your coat, and let's go."
"Go? Go where, Grandma?" I asked. I hadn't even finished my second cinnamon bun. "Where" turned out to be Kerby's General Store, the one store in town that had a little bit of just about everything. As we walked through its doors, Grandma handed me ten dollars. That was a bundle in those days. “Take this money," she said, "and buy something for someone who needs it. I'll wait for you in the car." Then she turned and walked out of Kerby's. I was only eight years old. I'd often gone shopping with my mother, but
never had I shopped for anything all by myself. The store seemed big and crowded, full of people scrambling to finish their Christmas shopping. For a few moments I just stood there, confused, clutching that ten-dollar bill, wondering what to buy, and who on earth to buy it for.
I thought of everybody I knew: my family, my friends, my neighbors, the kids at school, the people who went to my church. I was just about thought out, when I suddenly thought of Bobbie Decker. He was a kid with bad breath and messy hair, and he sat right behind me in Mrs. Pollock's grade-two class.
Bobbie Decker didn't have a coat. I knew that because he never went out for recess during the winter. His mother always wrote a note, telling the teacher that he had a cough, but all we kids knew that Bobbie Decker didn't have a cough, and he didn't have a coat. I fingered the ten-dollar bill with growing excitement. I would buy Bobbie Decker a coat.
I settled on a red corduroy one that had a hood to it. It looked real warm, and he would like that. "Is this a Christmas present for someone?" the lady behind the counter asked kindly, as I laid my ten dollars down.
"Yes," I replied shyly. "It's ... for Bobbie." The nice lady smiled at me. I didn't get any change, but she put the coat in a bag and wished me a Merry Christmas. That evening, Grandma helped me wrap the coat in Christmas paper and ribbons, and write, "To Bobbie, From Santa Claus" on it -- Grandma said that Santa always insisted on secrecy. Then she drove me over to Bobbie Decker's house, explaining as we went that I was now and forever officially one of Santa's helpers.
Grandma parked down the street from Bobbie's house, and she and I crept noiselessly and hid in the bushes by his front walk. Then Grandma gave me a nudge. "All right, Santa Claus," she whispered, "get going." I took a deep breath, dashed for his front door, threw the present down on his step, pounded his doorbell and flew back to the safety of the bushes and Grandma. Together we waited breathlessly in the darkness for the front door to open. Finally it did, and there stood Bobbie.
Forty years haven't dimmed the thrill of those moments spent shivering, beside my grandma, in Bobbie Decker's bushes. That night, I realized that those awful rumors about Santa Claus were just what Grandma said they were: ridiculous. Santa was alive and well, and we were on his team.

Lisa's Christmas

Lisa was born into a loving Christian family and went through life knowing
of The Lord and his supreme sacrifice. She was accustomed to Amazing Grace each Sunday and saying grace before meals. Lisa knew of the birth of baby Jesus; that worshippers came from far and wide bearing gifts. After all this was no ordinary birth.
One day while in the car with her mother when Lisa was about 8 years old, she saw a sign saying Merry Xmas. "What does that mean?" she asked her mother. "Well" said her mother "I believe it used to be a cross however over the years it has gotten turned". "OK but why a cross" asked Lisa It is the birth of Christ not X"
Her mother proceeded to explain that people are so hurried now they don't take the time to write out the full word and by not doing so they change the meaning entirely. Well Lisa was determined she was never going to write Christmas that way.
Lisa also knew of gifts at Christmas and again had a question "Why do we give gifts to each other when it is Christ's Birthday not ours?"
"Good Point" replied her mom " Love is a Christian act and giving is too so these are Gods principals being followed" "OK said Lisa now I understand"
Christmas Morning Lisa came downstairs; in her hand was an envelope. There was a beautiful tree and loads of presents. Lisa did not seem to care. She was anxious about something. "What is wrong?" her mom asked. "Nothing replied Lisa but I have no gifts for you. I have one gift and it is for the one having the birthday."
She opened the envelope and in it was a letter to Jesus Here is what it said
Dear Jesus
Happy Birthday! I love you very much and wanted you to know I remembered. I don't know why so many people lose sight of what this day really means but I promise never to do that. I promise you to try a little harder this year to be nicer to those that are mean to me and to love those that don't love me. I promise to try to talk to you more often not just when things go bad for me. Most of all Jesus I promise to keep Christ in my heart so that those I touch you will touch also.
I hope your birthday is special and at least for one day n honor of it I hope everyone will be nice and loving to each other and help others.

It was a Christmas Miracle

So there we were, awkwardly staring at one another in utter disbelief that nobody could figure it out. It was a week before Christmas, and all through the house, your narrator was fuming….I could smash my mouse! We were trying to put up our Christmas tree, and we weren’t having much luck. Bah Humbug!!
My family and I went out early that morning to find the perfect tree. I filled up a thermos with hot apple cider, and got the kids ready to go. The three of them got on our big old sleigh, and my husband and I took turns pulling them through the bush. We live out in the country, and we have this majestic forest on the back of our land. Every year we go out together and find the perfect tree, and the children each have a hand in cutting it down. It has become a wonderful family tradition.
We returned home and had some lunch while the tree thawed out, and then I gathered the boxes of decorations from the basement. We finally got the tree into the stand, and started stringing the lights. My husband suggested that we test the lights first, but I didn’t see the point. I strung all of the lights, plugged them in, and nothing happened. He didn’t even bother to say "I told you so"!
I decided to remove the lights from the tree, and swore that I would find the bulb that was causing us so much trouble. I spent the next hour or so changing and replacing each and every bulb on the string. I plugged them back in, and nothing happened. I was fast becoming the Scrooge!
By this time my husband was playing on the computer, and the kids were having a snowball fight in the yard. I decided it was time for some Egg Nog. When I returned, my husband was examining each of the bulbs. He told me that the circuit was being broken somehow, and that in time he would figure it out. Five minutes later, the lights were aglow! Those were different times then. Mom didn’t work outside the home and family lives weren’t as hectic as they are today. Today, it seems like there is a mad rush from Halloween to Christmas Day and little time to simply enjoy the moments shared.
You can enjoy the fun times of homemade holiday baking by planning ahead of time. Christmas cookies make delicious, thoughtful gifts and are a great way to involve children in the festivities.
First, let’s look at the calendar and start planning with enough time. The first thing is to decide if you are going to bake holiday cookies for home, for entertaining or if you are going to be giving them as gifts and how many. Allow yourself plenty of time to start getting things together. Late October isn’t too early.
Next, let’s decide how many varieties of cookies to bake. A variety is nice, but too many can be overwhelming. I like to bake three to four different types of cookies. This way, I can make larger dough batches ahead of time, and still have a nice display.

This will be a huge time-saver as later on, you will simply be able to defrost the dough, bake and decorate. Since you have all already shopped for the ingredients, set aside an hour or so to mix the dough recipes.

Just take a look at the commercials that air constantly during the Christmas season. They all have one goal in mind: to motivate you to spend as much money as you can during the holidays.

If this scenario sounds familiar, it doesn’t have to be that way yet again this Christmas. You can take a few simple steps to alleviate Christmas debt altogether.
Here’s how:
· Spread your holiday spending throughout the year. If you’re one of those people who love to lavish your family members with expensive gifts during the Christmas season and you don’t want to stop the practice, you can avoid a debt hangover by spreading your purchases throughout the year instead of all at once a few weeks before Christmas.
· Set a holiday budget. Decide what you can reasonably afford to spend during the holidays and do not go above that amount even if it means sacrificing gifts along the way.
· Buy only for those closest to you. Contrary to what you might believe, you do not need to buy gifts for all 27 of your nieces and nephews.
